  1. d. All of the answers are correct

  2. NEWSFLASH:

I am a big supporter of 'GREEN' Living - but the way the U.S. produces Ethanol ain't it!

It actually takes MORE fossil fuels to PRODUCE the ethanol (driving the tractor - powering the facility creating the ethanol) than you get in return - of ethanol in product.

We've got a long way to go in this country.  Besides the Oil Cartel..........there is the Corn Cartel.

    I am serious.

  3. I can see you want us to use ethanol to replace our current fuels.  I will tell you that the answer to your specific question is D.  I also think you see that as justification to switch our fuel use to ethanol.  I ask you to answer some of my questions first before you get to excited.

How many BTUs per gallon are there in pure Ethanol?

How many BTUs per gallon are there in Gasoline or Diesel?

What are the economic impacts of growing corn or sugar cane purely for transportation use?

What are the effects of ethanol on internal combustion engines?

What is the net energy gain after factoring in production and shipping of ethanol?

Is the government currently subsidizing ethanol production?

The answers to these questions are the reason why America will not use Ethanol as a major fuel source.

  4. the answer is b because a, only certain types of CARS can use it. Not c, because Ethanol is not made out of sugar cane.

  5. D - All of the above

A- It is used as a fuel for cars and trucks. All vehicles in Brazil currently use ethanol in an E98 mixture. E85 is becoming popular here in the USA. Vehicles which are not ethanol ready can be changed with an E85 conversion kit like the ones sold at http://www.change2E85.com .

B - Yes the emissions from Ethanol are significantly lower than gasoline. 30-70 percent reduction.

    C. It can be made from anything that has starches. In France a majority of ethanol is made from grapes or wine. The Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado sends their waste to an ethanol plant. Sugar beets, waste wood, switch grass, and many other crops are being used in the manufacture of ethanol. Many say that producing ethanol from crops is a waste - however the waste product from ethanol production is food.

  6. D......and lets get to it. All the by products from ethanol production can be used, or put back into the soil. it is good use of nature, when viewed as a system, much better than oil.

BTU's? cars do not run on BTU's, BTU's break down your car, they are waste heat from the internal combustion, so if properly built and run on ethanol it should last longer, gas is 87 octane ethanol 101 so a higher compression ratio will increase mileage and reduce maintenance cost.

  7. all the answers are basically correct ethanol is usually blended with gas  i don't believe there is any vehicle street legal at present that uses pure ethanol and sugar cane and sugar beets are great sources for ethanol

  8. d all of the above.

    --------

    a b and c are all true

  9. D

A- yes, all it takes on most modern cars is a simple reprogramming of the ECU.  Adjust the fuel and spark tables in the cars computer, and BAM you have a car that can run on ethanol.  How do I know?  I've done it!

And yes, gasoline has a higher BTU rating than ethanol, but its also much less stable (lower octane rating) and burns MUCH hotter.  So if you were to build an ethanol-only high-compression turbocharged engine, you would produce more power with a smaller displacement and better gas mileage than you could ever with gasoline.  Why is this?  Ethanol is a more efficient fuel; so while gasoline has more energy per volume, an engine that can run it is much more wasteful than an engine that can run only ethanol.

B- yes, this is also true.  Some may say that the fertilizer and such used for current production does cause a sizable amount of pollution.  While this is certainly a valid point, the ethanol industry is starting to move away from producing ethanol from food crops towards using existing bio-waste and more benign crops like grass, gradually making this argument null and void.

C- yes, as those currently are the main sources of ethanol.  But as some have said, it is not wise to use food sources as fuel and there are environment impacts of growing these crops in large numbers.  Fortunately, cellulosic ethanol is advancing greatly, and will allow the use of bio-waste, such as grass clippings or saw dust, to be used to produce ethanol.  As this technology becomes cheaper, which it currently is, more and more ethanol will be made by non-food products that are otherwise considered useless and discarded.

  10. a. Wrong! Vehicles can be built to run on ethanol; most existing ones will not.

    b. Wrong! When the energy needed to produce ethanol is included the yield is about 30-40 gal/acre, not 400-500 claimed by the ethanol lobby. "Pollution" includes fertilizer, equipment usage, soil loss, habitat destruction and other factors.

    c. Right but each acre used to produce ethanol could feed one or more persons. There is not enough arable land in the world to provide an adequate diet for the present population. Ethanol production is genocide.

  11. A and C are correct.

B is incorrect when you consider the fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides and dust of ethanol production, not to mention the destruction of habitat.

  12. D, however the use of it is not practical because we use more fossil fuels to produce it. Only because we need to find the enzyme that can break down the cell wall and then the yeast can produce the ethanol. Then we can become a green country. Wind is the next big thing because its is mor practical and the wind farms of the NW United States could be generating power to pump to the east and west coast and the wind blows constantly there.
