Question:

Question about FAFSA?

I applied for FAFSA and I got a letter saying I'll get roughly 15000 in grants and 5000 in loans to be paid back. Per year. Then they said they would Email me when they knew for sure. My tuition for my college is only about 9000 per year without room and board. Will I get the extra money for book and room if I want to live off campus? How does this work exactly? I am clueless. Thank you in advance

  1. there are different costs of attendance for on and off campus students. just as there is a different budget for students living with their parents. a student living with mom and dad is spending way less than a student paying for a dorm or an apartment. more than likely, living on campus has a marginally higher cost than living in an off campus apartment on your own. at least as far as the university is concerned. the higher the cost, the more financial aid you are eligible for. if they awarded you as a student living on campus and you move off campus, they might reduce your aid somewhat. you should ask your financial aid office if moving off campus will reduce your financial aid awards. if it does, you should still get a refund, just not one that is as high. good luck.

  2. You will need to check with your aid administrator at your school about how much you will be awarded.  I've never heard of getting so much in grants maybe scholarships but not grants.  The Aid Administrator at your school will tell you how much you can be awarded in all at your school of choice.

  3. Usually with grants you can get a check for living expenses, they best way to describe it is you should get a voucher to pay for your books at your school's bookstore, whatever is left out of that I believe is yours. I also know it depends where you live and all that (for living expenses) but I would think you would get something.

  4. If you get 15000 in grants and your school only costs 9000 then they will give you back the rest of the money that is not used and you are free to use it for whatever you like. 15000 does seem like a lot but I definetely wouldn't doubt it because I got 10,000 per year and my school only costs 4,000 a year so I definetely don't think there was any kind of mistake made but check with the school to make sure. When I got my letter in the mail though, it was exactly what they said it was.
