I am saving to buy an HD tv. I like my old VCR tapes and DVD's. I like playing video games, and darnit I will play it on my big screen. What type of HD do I need to do theses things? Do I need to chang my VCR, DVD types, also? What old electronic will not work on the new t.v?

  1. All your old stuff should play just fine on a new HDTV.  I bought an HD tv myself and they have your RCA(yellow red, and white) components, SVHS, component cables (red, green and blue) and HDMI (the new HD cable).  I am able to enjoy my vhs tapes, my playstation 2, my HD channels on tv and my HD movies on my HD DVD as well as my standard dvds just fine.  Talk to the sales person for specifics, but I think you should be fine with all your old equipment.

If you can swing for a well known brand name, you might be a little better off.  I went for an Olevia, which don't get me wrong, it works fine.  But I have a minor annoyance when it comes to the "handshake protocol".  It takes about 10 seconds to power up and my provider (AT&T Uverse) said that they didn't really support my brand since it was so new of a company but will in the future...just something to keep in mind.

  2. all those components will work on your new HD tv, but the resolution will not be any better. An HD tv is only has good as the components that you connect to it. You may want to upgrade those VHS to DVD. You will also need to get at least some component cables. HD cables are typically components, HDMI or DVI cables. If you go to any electronic store they can show you these options and I am sure much more.

    Good luck.

  3. You should get an LCD tv. The picture on a plasma is better but LCD is much better for video game play. Your vcr and dvd will work but your vcr tapes will look bad (you can see the difference between tapes and dvds now and when you get a larger screen that makes tapes look even worse). If you cable or sattelite, you'll need to upgrade your converter box in order to watch real hdtv  (cable companies rent them just like your current box). All of your old electronics will still work with your new tv.
