Question about HDMI connections?

I want to hook up my upconverting DVD player to my HDTV using an HDMI cable. However, HDMI carries both audio and video, so how would I go about hooking my DVD player up to my audio receiver?

Right now, I have my DVD player hooked up to my receiver via a digital coaxial cable for digital surround...and the video to my TV via s-video cable. Could I just replace the s-video cable with an HDMI cable and keep the digital coaxial (audio) cable hooked up to my receiver for sound? Or will the HDMI output of the DVD player bypass the digital coaxial output?

  1. The simple answer is yes--replace the s-video with the HDMI and leave everything else alone.  I assume you turn off the TV speakers when you use the A/V receiver.  The DVD player should output digital audio to both the HDMI  and digital audio (coax or optical) outputs.

  2. Replace the s-video cable with the HDMI cable and keep the digital coaxial (audio) cable hooked up to your receiver for sound.  You might have lower the audio on the tv to its lowest setting.  Don't mute the tv audio, you might get the speaker icon with the red line displayed.
