  1. The number is how many pixels, or little coloured dots, make up the pictures width.  More pixels = better clarity.  p stands for progressive and i interlaced, interlaced means every other row of pixels is blank making the picture bigger but poorer quality.

Standard definition TV, on an old tube based (non-plasma or LCD) was 480i, so 480 pixels wide with every other line of pixels being blank to make the picture bigger.

I have an xbox360 and it runs most games at 720p on a 42" plasma tv, it looks great.  1080 is the best pixel value and progressive looks much better than interlaced, but remember a lot of games for consoles automatically turn themselves down to 720p or something regardless of what you set it at.  On my xbox360 the most difference I saw when I got an HDMI cable and could do 1080p, was the interface and menus looked crisper and cleaner.

  2. ah I was in your position months back and now it feels as if I can answer any question anyone asks about HD......

to summarize is basically how many pixels of color there is on the screen the more the better......1080 looks gorgeous while 480 looks "blurry" at times.....

to explain the difference between 1080i 1080p and 720 check out this video from youtube and its not as complicated as you think.....PLEAS LOOK AT THE LINK FROM YOUTUBE IT IS VERY HELPFUL ON THIS TOPIC

to generalize always look for TV's with higher resolution 1080p being the best 480i the absolute worst.....and a higher contrast ratio just mention this to the salseperson at the store and you'll be fine.....

MAKE SURE TO WATCH THE VIEO LINK AS IT EXPLAINS FULLY AND EASILY WHAT ALL THESE TERMS MEAN!!!!
