Question:

Question about Howard Miller grandfather clock?

I was at a store looking at a Howard Miller grandfather clock model number 610-939 Majestic II. When I wanted to listen to the chime, it sounded very low inside the store and I could barely hear it. I asked if there was a volume control button and there isn't one.

The person told me its because the store is so big and there's lots of other furniture around it that it doesen't allow the "full sound" of the chime be able to be heard.

Does this make sense? Is this person's answer right?

  1. this person just wants to make a sale. Here is a way that you can check for yourself. Either go back to the store when it just opens, so that there is very limited background noise, same for late at night just before they close. Also ask them to move the clock outside of the business dorrs with a dolly so that you can challenge them on their theory as well. If they want the sale, they should have no problem moving it for you to check out.

  2. I have 2 Howard Miller clocks, one grandfather and one mantel.  The mantel clock actually chimes louder than the grandfather.  Both are in rooms that have a lot of furniture, so I really don't believe that impacts the loudness of the sound.  I would say that the mantel clock can be heard upstairs all of the way to my master bedroom on the other side of the house at night while I am sleeping and the grandfather cannot be heard outside of the living room.  My neighbor also has a Howard Miller but a different model than mine in the same model house I have that can be heard all over her house and is much louder than mine chimes.  So, I have come to the conclusion that different models do chime at different volumes...
