  1. Hypermiling is a way of driving in which the car uses as little fuel as possible. It is actually more challenging than people think it is. I've done it some and depending on what tactics you use it can be more dangerous than driving normally. The tactics that make hypermiling dangerous are actually illegal in most states, like drafting semi trucks (your car has be literally kissing the truck's bumper for this to be effective).

    Tactics I use...

    1) Let off the gas when approaching a red light and then feather the gas pedal to keep the car moving to make a green. This is a bit tougher than it seems, especially if the hwy dept keeps re-timing the lights.

    2) Do the same above when approaching a stop sign but you'll have to be more cautious because of the cars ahead of you. The object: come to a complete stop and be the next to go thru the intersection.

    3) Neutral when coasting downhill, also works for automatics. This is illegal in some states so be careful doing this.

    4) Shut the engine off at long lights and when waiting for a train to cross.

    5) Cycle the A/C on and off but leave it "off" as long as tolerable before switching it back on. Leave the windows closed.

Doing the tactics above I got 40mpg city from a car w/ auto tranny rated at 30mpg city.

btw...I have read reports of a guy who got 56mpg out of a V6 powered Honda Accord and a group of people who got approx 104mpg out of a Prius but I think they used even more extreme (read dangerous) tactics.

  2. Hypermiling is driving so slow that your car doesn't even use gas. You pop it in neutral going down hills, turn off your car at redlights, never go above 55 mph etc. It's not bad for the car but you will get flipped off.
