Question:

Question about ISP address tracking? PLEASE HELP!?

I was on the site justin.tv and my user name was mistaken with somebody elses. my name was a variation of a popular soccer player's name. the broadcaster of the channel (it's a "lifecast" or something) immediately typed my IP address into the chat. The people in the chat said they were going to trace it. what exactly does that mean? i found websites that you type numbers into and it tell you information about where the computer is located. no matter what i said they didn't believe it was a case of mistaken identity. then i got banned from typing on the chat.

what kind of information can they obtain? can they find out my home address, phone number, name, or anything else? is it legal? they are just users on the site that said they were going to find out who i was, but i don't want to receive phone calls or for them to give out my personal info in their chat. i reported it to the website, but that's not going to stop these users of the site. I'm not afraid of getting into any trouble or anything since i didn't do anything wrong, but i don't want tech savvy kids to be able to get my personal info and do what they please with it!

what kind of info can they get from an ISP address and should i be concerned? Thanks SO MUCH for ANY help!

  1. They can't find that information. You'll be safe.

  2. yes they can get your your town your ISP and your type of internet connection other than that I don't think they cant get your name or phone number I think.

    Here look it up.

  3. The only thing they can get with your IP is the name of your provider.  From there, they would need a warrant to get your personal information.  Best they can trace is the aprox location.  Maybe the town.

  4. They can find out your ISP and your country of origin. To be honest your IP address changes each time you connect so there's nothing to worry about.

    ISP - Internet Service Provider

    IP - Internet Protocol

    Don't get them confused.

  5. It is true they can google search or yahoo search on your user name, only public records, if any, will show up.

I google searched a vile, nasty woman's email address.

it turned out she was 65 or 66 typing like a teenager. It was her HUSBAND's email address that he used to stay in touch with his shipmates from the USS Gearing.

He is a Vietnam veteran.  I announced to the mailing list:  you are NOT anonymous.  She never wrote again.

I dropped it because her veteran hubby has already got his hands full.

Do not worry. Your IP [internet protocol] address identifies your computer not you. For example my IP address is:  75.119.1.181

I have seen that 'talkers' never do. Doers never talk about it, they just do it.

Do not be afraid of the posers who are trying to frighten you.

  6. They can get information that you may not want to have but i don't think they can get your phonenumber or address but everything is possible so I could be wrong.

  7. Unless you were doing anything illegal, they can't.  Only ones who can use the IP to identify you is the internet provider, and they need a court order to release that information.
