Question about Illinois teaching type 39 certificate?

I am a recent graduate, just got laid off from my job in advertising. I have always wanted to teach and am thinking about making a change to teaching. I was thinking about starting off as a sub but was told by a few people there are some alternative schools and schools with shortages that will let you teach with a type 39 certificate. I was wondering what the process is for obtaining one and if you could provide a link to an application or more info on obtaining one. Thanks.

  1. Just access your local county's website.  There will be instructions there on how to submit your transcript showing  your B.S. or B.A. to the state.  They in turn will issue the certificate.  From there, subbing is a matter of applying to individual districts.  How mush work you get just depends on how flexible you are.

Alternative schools are generally schools for the behavior disordered---or those that have been kicked out of "regular" public schools.  they generally require, and at least prefer, a special education degree.  It's tough work for sure.  City schools would be where you want to investigate I guess, although the Chicago school board is really coming down on those schools that hired unqualified teachers.

The competition in Illinois is really fierce.  Your best bet is to begin subbing and submit your transcripts to the state so that they may do a transcript search.  this will show what classes you are deficient in for future certification.  It is not necessary to get another degree, but colleges/universities are not going to want to tell you that, as that would want you to sign up for a full program.
