  1. Till the sixties, Mumbai used to be a tranquil pleasant , yet happening city. Afterwards, lumpen elements from Bihar & UP descended on it in hordes & brought it to the level of patna & kanpur.

  2. I'd blame it on the planning.  City developers who are putting down their head when a city is planned had lack of vision, while our counterparts in cities like Sydney were far better, as a result of which those cities are better organised.

Most of our hill stations are found by Brits, while they were ruling us and even today many roads and rail tracks remain just the way its built.

Chandrababu naidu while he was CM for Andhra had charted out a "AP Vision 2020", where he wanted Andhra cities to be world class and he emphasised lot of plans, one such was the IT city and lot more.

With our political system, where corruption is more dominant and our system of planning lacks visionaries, are reasons why our cities are not planned well.

  3. While population is one factor, there are many other factors such as culture of people, city planning, maintenance etc.

  4. There are many reasons!

First, Bad town planning - as the first answerer said

second - many cities are much too crowded and people do not have civic sense.. they keep their houses spotless but when it comes to being outside they don't hesitate in throing trash around, spitting, etc etc!

One more thing you will notice is in cities elsewhere there is not a piece of land barron.. there will be always some lawn, trees, concrete walkways etc which not only make the place look beautiful but also avoid dust.

In Indian cities you'll see they are extremely dusty.

And because of the huge population maintainance becomes difficult.

Other than these, there are so many very basic issues in india, like lack of water supply, power supply, low literacy rate, lack of good schools in small villages etc that beautification of the big cities is something that had much less priority for obvious reasons.

I would rather see whole India progressing rather than just a few cities! :)

  5. well, i'm not quite sure. it's because the roads are slightly poorly made, and also because of growing population; looks very crowded. but personally, i think there isn't much of a big deal; mumbai is a pretty good place.
