Why do they not allow international adoptions? But more importantly

my husband and i are looking to adopt a little Japanese or Korean boy. Is it possible to "find" a little one here in the United States? This may sound weird, but we're obviously just in the planning stages, and wondering...Thanks!

  1. You can adopt a Japanese child while living in the United States.  It may not be as common as adoption from China, Korea or Russia, but it does happen.

    Check out these family's websites:

While I agree that you should examine your situation to make sure that you are adopting for the right reasons, know that you have every right to choose the international route as opposed to the domestic route.  I have all the respect in the world for anyone who goes through the adoption process domestically or internationally but I don't agree with those who assume that you are less American for simply adopting overseas.  Do what is right for you.  It's your family.

To Ann M- how many American children have you adopted?  It's not fair to judge unless you have thoroughly researched international and domestic adoption for your own family.

  2. The japanese have a very low birth rate, and a high standard of living, so I think there is no need to place children outside of japan, therefore no international adoption. You might find a japanese or korean baby in the US, or a mixed race/ethnicity baby from one of  these backgrounds. However the more specific you are about the type of child you are open to, the longer the waiting time is likely to be. Generally in the US the natural mother chooses the adoptive parents. Also the pool of babies is small, so if you're very particular about the child's background the pool will be even smaller (and likely take longer). The same is true for gender. Many agencies don't allow you to specify the gender because the moms do not necessarily know the gender and they don't want situations to fall through.

The best approach is usually to be as open as possible to various adoption situations.

Although it would be rare, it is possible to find an Asian child up for adoption.

    Why not try China?

  4. i know that South Korea has a good amount of babies up for adoption, and if you want a boy you can get them fairly quickly.  in about a year.  this site will give you more info

  5. I guess this is one of my biggest pet peeves about the American people. There are so many children here in the states who are homeless and in foster homes, & orphanages. So many could be adopted yet everyone wants to go to other countries to adopt them. Charity begins at home in my opinion. I know it cost thousands of dollars to get a child from another country. We see shows where children are starving in other countries and we have it right here in the good USA but do we see it on TV ? No we don't.
