Question:

Question about Jury duty

I live in an area where there is no public transportation. The courthouse I was summoned to is also at least 40 minutes from my house. My car stopped working and due to strain it put on my husband having to pick me up and take me to work, I stopped working for the time being. The bills are under control but there is no way he could afford or even be allowed to transport me to and from the courthouse while having to work himself. I'm pretty sure this excuse (which is true) will work but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of them sending a cop to your house to pick you up or something like that if you don't have a car. They won't do that will they?

  1. Call the county jury office and explain your predictament.

I'm sure they will grant you a temporary extension, provided that you haven't received one recently.

Better yet, offer them a date as to when you will be able to fulfill your duty and attempt to schedule it then.

  2. Call and get advice from the county cout clerk. Tell them you are going to vote not Guilty on any case that you are chosen for.

  3. Explain your hardship; I'm sure that they will excuse you. They won't go out of their way to provide transportation.

  4. On your first day of jury duty, when the defense is doing the voir dire, simply tell him/her that you read the paper and have a grasp on what is going on around you.  You will be dismissed immediately.  The defense wants a jury box full of 12 Paris Hilton types.

  5. If you can't go to jury duty you can always tell them you are a member of the Church of jesus christ of latter day saints aka mormon. They don't want people to be as biased or jugdmental as the members tend to be so they wont want you to do your duty.

  6. As a matter of fact they very well might send a cop to pick you up. It depends on the Judge. If they do send a cop to give you a ride he will have a nice shiny new bracelet for you to wear while they process you for the contempt of court charge.  Do not miss first panel day of court for these reasons stated. I was on a federal jury panel in California on the 9 circuit court and when we showed up for the first day there was a woman on the panel raising all kinds of cane for having to be there. The Judge walked in an let us know he had been listening in on the room.

He had her stand up and told her the following statement. "You are an American citizen with all the privileges and rights of a citizen. As an American citizen you have very few duties defined by the constitution but this is one of them and you will meet your obligation to fulfill that duty or you will renounce that citizenship this minute! Decide right now!"

She sat down and shut up. I got picked for a jury she never did. I think she had to come to the court house five times in three months.
