Question:

Question about Law School

My daughter has her four year degree in Psychology and of course does not want to use it now. She now wants to go to law school, but the college she wants to go to is very hard to get into. Someone told her to get her MBA first, and then go to law school. Anyone else go to Law School, and have any suggestions?? Thanks!

  1. It is possible to get into law school with a psychology degree--law schools take people from lots of different academic backgrounds. If she got a reasonably good GPA and does well on the LSAT she should be able to get into a decent law school. An advanced degree can help--if nothing else it separates you from all the other 'fresh out of college' applicants and in general good schools like applicants with life experience or additional degrees. That said I wouldn't recommend doing an MBA just to get into law school--its a lot of money and if your heart isn't in it you're not likely to do well and law schools probably won't jump to take an applicant who just got mediocre grades at another grad school.

Of course you can apply to both law schools and MBAs at the same time-- if she gets into her first choice law school great, if not she can do the MBA or something else.

  2. I would not recommend getting an MBA merely to get into a particular law school.  Having a psychology degree is as good as anything.  She may need to consider more than one law school--but that would be the same even if she went for her MBA.
