Question:

Question about Life is Beautiful?

I saw the movie years ago and it came on TV a few days ago and I caught pieces of it but I never thought of this until a few days ago. My question is; was it understood that the grandmother called the n***s to take Guido and his son away or did they come on their own.The scene in the book store with the grandmother and boy made me think about that. As you know if you saw the movie the woman's mother disowned her because she didn't want her to marry a Jewish man.

  1. I believe that the director (Roberto Benigni) left it open to debate.

The grandmother could have done it or perhaps someone in neighborhood could have called them. Maybe even someone working for the n***s as a spy reported them, after all, the n***s did go from town to town looking for Jews anywhere & everywhere they could find them.

I personally find it very difficult that the grandmother would have done that, it would also mean certain death to her own daughter as she was taken as well. Could someone really be that cold???

Let not the question or answer spoil your enjoyment to this beautiful film.

Here are some FUN FACTS about the movie:

Guido's wife, Dora, is played by Roberto Benigni's real-life wife, Nicoletta Braschi.

The number on Benigni's prison camp uniform is the same number on Charles Chaplin's uniform in The Great Dictator (1940), the satire of Hitler and fascism.

Roberto Benigni says the title comes from a quote by Leon Trotsky. In exile in Mexico, knowing he was about to be killed by Stalin's assassins, he saw his wife in the garden and wrote that, in spite of everything, "life is beautiful".

Roberto Benigni's Oscar for best actor marked only the second time that an actor had directed himself in an Academy Award winning performance. The other was Laurence Olivier for Hamlet (1948)

Roberto Benigni's Oscar win for Best Actor was the second time a performance completely in Italian had been awarded. The previous winner was Sophia Loren for Ciociara, La (1960).

Before they go to sleep Guido and Ferruccio have a few jokes about the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer was a favorite writer of Hitler.

Horst Buchholz did his own dubbing for the English and German dubbed versions.

In Italian, the answer to the "Snow White" riddle is seven "minuti" - a play on words between "minutes" and "dwarves".
