We are going with Bob Jones and would like to know if Algebra 1 in this book is the same as PreAlgebra in other books such as

  1. It isn't always easy to tell by just seeing a little of the TOC, but I am comparing the BJU with what we are using for Algebra I.  By comparison, BJU looks to be a tad "lighter,"  than this text, perhaps but in no way would I compare it to the Pre Algebra text of Teaching Textbook.  The BJU text looks fine.  The BJU Algebra book goes into quadratic equations, and work with polynomials which the pre-Algebra book doesn't touch.  In fact, when looking at the Teaching Textbook site, it doesn't get into the Qudratic Formula until its Algebra II book.  It does the same with Radical Equations.  So comparing, the BJU Algebra I book to the Teaching Textbook Algebra I, IMO, it looks like BJU covers a little more ground.  It is far more advanced than the pre-algebra book...

We are using the Prentice Hall Classics Algebra I Text by Paul Foerster.  This is the TOC:

    1.  Expressions and Equations

    2.  Operations with Negative Numbers

    3.  Distributing Axioms, and other Properties

    4.  Harder Equations

    5.  Some operations with polynomials and Radicals

    6.  Quadratic Equations

    7.  Expressions and Equations Containing Two Variables

    8.  Linear Functions, Scattered Data, and Probability

    9.  Properties of Exponents

    10.  More Operations with Polynomials

    11.  Rational Algebraic Expressions

    12.  Radical Algebraic Expressions

    13.  Inequalities

    14.  Functions and Advanced Topics--This last chapter gets into:  Functions, Direct and Inverse Variation Functions, Trigonometric Functions, Quadratic Functions, Solving Quadratic Inequalities by completing the square, Solving Quadratic inequalities by the Quadratic formula.
