Looking at a sale ad for mountainbikes and there's a number I don't understand (besides the price, LOL). Okay, I'll give a few examples:

2008 GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc Mountain Bike- $699.99

2008 GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc Mountain Bike- $499.99

2008 GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc Mountain Bike - $399.99

2008 GT Force 3.0 Mountain Bike - $1399.99

2008 Mongoose Tyax Comp Disc Mountain Bike - $299.99

What do the "1.0," "2.0," and "3.0," numbers mean. Are they the size or quality of the disc brakes?

Also, do you recommend GT or not?

  1. Those numbers are similar to model numbers;  its the same frame, but the 1.0 will have different components than the 2.0, etc.   You can tell the 3.0 has better components due to the higher retail price.

GT makes good bikes; shop with confidence.

  2. Usually, they mean the level of equipment.  GT has the Avalanche frame, and then they have different trims that they sell for more money.  On some brands, the lower number means the higher quality.

On GT, the 3.0 is the lower entry, while the 1.0 is the top of the line of the Avalanche frames.
