A Muslim may own a dog or dogs when:

-they need them for hunting (only hunting for food is allowed, sport hunting is forbidden)

- they need them for special personal services (like seeing-eye dogs for the blind)

-the dog is trained to guard their house (or cattle, if they are farmers)

-the dog is trained for police services

Dogs are considered unclean animals, and Muslims shouldn't have them as pets.

Even if you need the dog, it is recommended that Muslims do not let the dog sleep on their beds. They can be in the house and even in the bedroom, but not in the same bed.

It is said that angels do not enter a house which contains a dog. There is also an old Sunni Muslim tradition that says black dogs are evil, or even the devil in animal form.

However, Muslims shouldn't hate or abuse dogs. Actually, according to one story, Muhammad is said to have informed a prostitute who had seen a thirsty dog hanging about a well and given it water to drink. Allah forgave her because of that good deed. (Sahih Bukhari 4.56.673)
