Question:

Question about Nasdaq stocks and four letter tickers?

Are the only stocks on the Nasdaq that do not have four letter tickers ones that previously originated elsewhere? For example, nearly all stocks that I have seen listed on the Nasdaq have four letter tickers, except a few like CA and DTV, for example. Wikipedia says CA crossed from the Nyse to the Nasdaq back in April, and according to DTV's wikipedia entry, it is still on the Nyse. As Marketwatch lists DTV as Nasdaq and it is on the Nasdaq 100, I believe it is safe to assume it also transferred.

So, do all stocks originating on the Nasdaq begin as four letter tickers, and do any transfers just keep their originals to be the few exceptions?

Thanks for your help.

  1. As a general rule NYSE traded stocks are 3 letters or less.  NASD are 4. The most important difference to me is that NASD stop-loss orders can be overridden/cancelled by the market makers, but NYSE must honor them.
