My neti pot came with packages containing some sort of salt solution. These packages ran out. Can I just make this at home myself? Is it just salt?

  1. Yes I use 1/4 tsp

of sea salt in my neti pot  and when I'm feeling a cold coming on i buy the sea salt with the zinc additive

  2. Yes, you can make the salt solution at home. You could call the company that sold the Neti Pot to find out what kind of salt it was (table salt, sea salt, or some other solution). If they won't say (proprietary blend) or don't know, any sea salt should work, and the company that sold the Neti Pot should be able to tell you how much salt per usage should be used. If they don't tell you, 1 gram is pretty normal... about 1/4 teaspoon per 100 ml (just under 1/2 cup) for a standard 1% solution, which is the same consistancy as tears so there should be no irritation or problem. Good luck!

  3. Yes, you can.

Mineral salts work the best, and NEVER use table salt.

I've had some people use table salt, and they come back complaining that their nose was hurting and irritated.

My best bet is to get Himilayan crystal salt (mineral salt), or even buy some more packets.

NeilMed makes boxes of premixed packets for neti pots.

And use 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 250ml neti pot.

  4. You have to use non-iodide salt.  Don't use water unless it has some of this salt in it as it will dry out your sinus passages.  I use 1/4 teaspoon mixed in my Neti Pot for each nostril.
