Question about OB GYN?

I have never been to an ob gyn before. I have usually gone to my pcp for all that stuff. Do I need to get a referral to go to an ob gyn? And what do they do on your first initial visit?

  1. Are you pregnant? Have you already had the pregnancy confirmed at your pcp's office?  Once you have, your pcp will refer you to an ob/gyn.  The first visit usually involves alot of talking about medical history, symptoms and a pelvic exam with a pap smear.  Nothing scary.

  2. I just had my first appt with an OB the other day and he basically just went through all the papers he received from my family doctor and filled out other info about my pregnancy. And the other usual stuff...got weighed and took blood pressure and listened to baby's heartbeat. My doctor found the OB for me so I'm not sure if you can find your own or you need a referral.

  3. You do not need a referral, but it would be a good idea to bring a copy of your medical records, although its not necessary.  I didn't bring mine when I got pregnant I just went.   Just find one that you want to go to, and give them a call and tell them you are a new patient and want to get established.  Some places will tell you to come pick up some papers and fill them out and bring them back at your appointment, others will wait until your appointment to give them to you.  A gynecologist could definitely help you with your problem!

  4. some insurance company want u too, but all they do is find out how far along u r, n how healthy u r

  5. no you do not need a referral, just call and make your appointment.  what they do on your initial visit depends on what you make the appointment for.  if you havent had your yearly pap then they will probably want you to do that, and then do a breast exam as well.  if you are going for fertility reasons, then tell them when you make your appointment that you want a consultation with your doctor in addition to the pap or whatever you made the appoitment for, that way they can schedule the doctor to have more time to spend with you for talking.  if you just schedule a pap then the doctor may have another scheduled patient close to your time and not have as much time to talk.

  6. If your insurance involves an HMO plan, then yes, you would need your PCP to refer you to a OBGYN.

If your insurance is a PPO, then you can see a OBGYN any time you wish.

If you haven't had a period in 2 years something is going on and you need to see a specialist.  You probably won't get pregnant without help at this point.  Whatever the problem is, it is undoubtedly out of the scope of your regular PCP and you're wasting time seeing him/her for this particular problem.

An initial visit with an OBGYN involves taking a complete history of your menstrual cycles.  The doctor will ask you questions about your periods.  He/she will do a pelvic exam, ultrasound, and pap smear if you haven't had one within a year.  They may also do a breast exam, and take blood and urine samples.

    Good luck.
