Question about Pc Card, PLEASE HELP!?

Ok i have a new toshiba laptop, and it has wi-fi on it. And i have never paid for internet service cause i lived with my boyfriend and at his house they had internet and i just used their connection, and i do the same at work. But i Just moved into an apartment and i dont want to get home internet because i have to get the router and all that junk. I just want to get a wireless pc card so wherever i go my internet will work and i wont have to use someone elses. So my Question was I have been lookin at all these different phone companys and such and i learned that Verizon and att has the pc cards for 60$ a month. But i kept researching to see if i can find something a little cheaper, and i saw linksys pc cards and other pc cards. So my question is if i just buy a linksys pc card will the internet work, or will i no matter what have to pay 60$ a month for a wireless pc card? And do i have to sign a contract? Please someone just inform me a little more on how these things go about, and if you know any providers that are any cheaper. there are two different ways of wireless internet, the one you had in your boyfriends house (with modem and router) and the one provided by phone companies like Verizon and AT&T.

the kind provided by phone companies are for people they are mostly "on the road" and it functions like cell phones - you have to sign a contract. but i believe you're not a person who need this.

the other kind is the one you already know and you haven't to buy something like this linksys pc card, because this is the same card that is already built in your Toshiba laptop.

the consequence of this is, if you want a home internet in your appartement, you have to sign a contract with a cable or dsl internet provider what isn't that expensive as one with a phone company. and btw, you only need a wireless router at home if you want to use your laptop wireless, otherwise you can also go online wired via the modem provided by the internet provider.
