I just opened up my bag of potatoes and found that one of them is rotten (it smelled bad!), anyhow should I throw out the other 6 potatoes that seem to be ok?

And for future reference, what is the best way to store potatoes?

Thanks :)

btw...I tried posting this 45 mins. ago, but I didn't see it post...sorry if it's a repeat and I just missed it :)

  1. No, they should be alright. If you keep the rest of them out of the fridge, make sure the bag stays open and in a cool place. They should be fine.

  2. I put my spuds in the frig.  Cut the other ones open to see if they are black and if so, then yes throw them out, but not they should be ok.

  3. The other potatoes are fine but I would use them sooner then later. The best way to store potatoes is in a cool dry place.

  4. If only one of them is rotten, the others should be ok. The best way to store potatoes is to buy them still with a dirt covering (will store for longer) & keep them in a dry dark place.

  5. just throw the rotten potato out the others are fine they need to be stored at room tempature so you are fine

  6. Potatoes should be stored in dark areas. Keep them out of the sunlight.

  7. If they don't seem rotten, they aren't.  Potatoes are pretty tough.  It's not like cheese or something, so they aren't contaminated.

  8. They should be okay.  I'd refrigerate them right away.

However, you can test for whether or not others are starting to rot.   Before you peel the potatoes cut them in half and taste them.  Just touch your tongue to the cut raw edge.  If it tastes sugary sweet toss that potato.  It's starting to go bad.  If you cook it with any that are good, this flavor will get into the potatoes and ruin your recipe.

If like my mother, who was fastidious about such things. She'd slice off a piece of the potato and put it in her mouth.  Don't  swallow it if it's got that off flavor.

  9. They should be fine.  As long as they don't have any rot spots, don't worry about it.

  10. How big are the eyes on the rest of them, if they are sticking out pretty good it is best they be used soon, say with in the next couple of days. The one that became rotten was more than likely hit on something and this caused it to go down hill faster than the rest. Sort of like hitting your arm or leg on something and it becomes bruised. Keep the rest of them in a cool dark place. I know my GGF used to keep them in a shed under straw this would keep them over the winter. Yes a few of them would rot but that goes with it. He loved them no matter what, each meal would have to go out a dig around to find him some.

  11. Just throw out the bad ones, the rest should be ok, you need to keep them somewhere dry and dark.
