I have to travel here in Costa Rica between work and home, which is only a total of 5 kilometers and on level ground. I am a big guy , weight about 280 lbs, would a 150 cc scooter be ok ?

They have a Genesis one here in Costa Rica brand new 2009 for about $2,000 dollars.

  1. Judging what you're describing sounds like the streets and roads of Vietnam. If that's the case, a scooter is your best bet.

For a guy your weight on level ground. You should be OK.

Never heard of a Genesis One. I'm partial to the classic, like the Bajaj(they're sold in Uruguay). They're like the Vespa "P" models.

  2. should be just fine! most scooters are pretty durable and can carry a good deal of weight, just check with the maker to see if there are any restrictions.

my husband weighs about 240 and rides around on a 110cc dirtbike, if that helps at all!

  3. My husband weighs the same as you and he can ride my 150cc fine. What you all loose is fast acceleration over about 30-35 MPH. Your acceleration after that will be more slow and steady.

What will traffic speed around you be? If you are talking city traffic you will be just fine. If you the roads you are one will have everyone driving at 50-55 MPH I would consider something bigger.

5K is a short distance get a scooter and make your ride to work fun.

  4. I am 224 pounds and ride a 70cc Honda. I ride 4 miles each way to work, and it gets me there with no problem. If you're 60 pounds heavier and have double the displacement, I think you'll do fine.

  5. 5km is roughly 3 miles and 200 meters.  you could save a lot of money by getting a bike.  At your weight you should definitely get a sturdy bike.  I dont know anyone that cant even cruise along at 12mph on level road for only 3 miles.  You would be riding roughly 15 minutes or possibly 20 minutes at a leisurely pace.  Just for comparison, I can run a 5k under 20 minutes.  You should atleast keep up with my running pace on a bike.  I am pretty sure that you can get a bike for around $400 that will accomodate someone of your size.  You would save $1,600 not to mention more money in the long run for the gas you would have to pay to run a scooter.

Besides a 150cc scooter will get you to places but it will surely struggle underneath your 280lbs.  I question whether it can even go up a hill at 15mph pace under your weight.

Most scooters go around 40mph.  Even less if the low capacity engine doesnt require you to get a license.

I would personally save money by getting a bike.
