  2. If I remember correctly,  Sassoon was a big anti-war poet during World War I...

    This poem is written for soldiers, and it's dripping with sarcasm... He's saying it DOES matter if these things happen to you- it doesn't matter to the people they don't happen to- they just think "Oh, he's come back a hero." But they don't really care that your life is ruined... He's saying "What good is being a hero when you lose everything?"
