Question about Spybot search and destroy?

Can you download this program without real time protection and use it as just an on demand scanner because I don't want real time protection to conflict with my other programs.

Yep.  The thing I didn't like about Spybot real-time is that it stores all the sites it wants to block in the Registry.  When I saw that, I was like wtf, gets this c**p out of my Registry.  Uninstall, fix registry, cya.

There is a new scanner that I trust, it's relatively new freeware/shareware available at malwarebytes.org, called MBAM.  You do have to register, but the site is widely respected.  If you want to buy the real time version, it's a one time $30 purchase, no renewals.

Absolutely. That's how I use it.

FYI, another good spyware program is Lavasoft's AD-AWARE (also free).

You CAN run BOTH of these. Usually what one misses, the other finds.

Yes... just do not use "Tea-Timer". It is the real time protection agent of Spybot

The reason why Spybot is the best anti-spyware is because of the advance features that block unknown spywares/adwares/trojans.

Windows does not provide protection to registry and most malwares are launch using registry. Tea Timer is the onlything I know that can block unauthorise registry editing.  If you disable the advance features, you are taking the bullets out of the gun to reduce weight but make the gun useless.

Usually, it is the unknown malwares that are more dangerous than the known ones. Scanning for known malwares is not as important as blocking unknown malwares from changing your registry.

If you install it with real time protection enabled, you can turn it off under advanced options menu, eg. tea timer and sd helper.
