Question about Tattoos and Broadway...?

Hi, I am 18,and have always dreamt of singing on broadway some day and have been working on my singing voice since I was 3...and with roles like Ariel in the little mermaid and christine daae in Phantom of the opera, my dreams will hopefully come true one day, but I have a question regarding tattoos and broadway...I have one tat on my breast, its very visible, it is a tribal bear paw with claws and an eye in the middle...and i was wondering if Broadway would shun me as soon as i came in the door for an audition due to my tattoo?? Or would they just put me in a body suit if in some rare case I actually landed a role?? Please answer...the question has been bugging me for quite a while and I cannot seem to find any answers anywhere....thank you!

  1. well stage makeup works so well they could just cover it up...

  2. they could just use makeup to cover it up, but make sure when you go there, wear a shirt that covers well :)

but also tell them you have the tat.

  3. make up definitely.  well, i haveta say that that often can make them turn to someone equally good for the role but with out a tatoo, so keep your fingers crossed

lady prism, that is a gorgeous tat.  i'm totally jealous...though im a guy....i guess if i had one of those itd be weird.  but its awesome anyway.

  4. I have 2 really big tattoos... the one on my back is easy to hide depending on what I'm wearing, but in a lowcut gown it shows bad http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk309...

I have another one that starts on my left bicep, circles around my arm, through my armpit, around my shoulder, and almost to my spine on my back.

I am on stage a lot.  For more formal gigs, I try to wear something to hide both tats, but that doesn't always happen.  Usually for auditions and first time gigs, I cover up my tats... if not with clothing, then with makeup.

There's a really great brand that they stopped making last year and I haven't been able to find it for a while, but I did find something close that DOES WORK... http://www.pacificnwcostume.com/tattoo_c...

It is expensive though, and using it on a daily basis can get VERY costly.  Once you start landing roles, you may be able to write it off as a buisness expense.

If you manage to land a role, I would continue to hide it.  Let your makeup artist know, and they will probably help you out too.

After you have worked for a while and established a reputation you can begin to show it at rehearsals and such... but if anyone seems to have a problem with it, continue to cover it.

Also, at some auditions they may ask you specifically what tattoos, birth marks, or visible scars you have... it depends on the role... for Ariel, this may be a standard question as it is no surprise that your costume is a bikini top.  I would be honest about it, as lying could constitute a breech of contract... but let them know that you are willing to cover it.  Maybe even have half of it cosmetically covered so you can show them how well you can make it disappear.

Anyways, hope this helped, and break a leg! :)

  5. It really depends...if it is on your breast, that MIGHT be a problem only because the characters of Christine Daae and Ariel, their b*****s/cleavage ARE visible. Makeup could cover it. I know that Sandra Joseph (at one time she was Christine Daae) had a tattoo on her shoulder, and it obviously wasn't a problem. I don't know...sorry I couldn't help more. I just think it depends WHAT your tattoo is, and WHERE it is.

  6. depends! if the tattoo is really big and you look like if you were in a gang maybe
