I'm thinking of getting a Maori tattoo on my right arm, but not being a Maori, would it be considered disrespectful to get a tattoo of one of their designs?

  1. be sure to research in depth the meanings of the maori work before you get it done. These tattoos carry deep meaning, and should be chosen with care

  2. tattoos website

  3. Mine are mostly Oriental style and I'm a pale, fair-haired Brit!

Of course it doesn't matter whether or not you're a Maori - a tattoo is a personal thing.

  4. Ok, I can't answer for them because I'm Irish, not Maori.  But I just wanted to say that I really love tribal tatts and its culture and read them as an indicator that someone respects that culture they are getting inked.  So imo, I'd get anything that meant something to me because it's my body.  And as far as Maori culture goes, I might raise an eyebrow if you got one on your face, but def. not on your arm.

  5. How many Maoris do you figure you'll be running into?  If tatoos were subject to copyright infringement, which they aren't, there would be a whole lot of people in big trouble.  If you have any reservations about getting a tatoo, and I mean any reservations AT ALL, I would advise you not to do it.  You aren't ready and it could be something you regret for the rest of your life.

  6. i guess it depends on the type of maori tattoo you are gertting, maybe try speaking to a maori elder in your area and get their opinion?  but it should be ok

  7. iv got celtic tattoos and im not celtic, just go for it
