I wanted to buy a new Trek, but the new models are very expensive. Is there anywhere where I can buy an older model that is new for a cheaper price. I am specifically looking for a touring bike

  1. Brand new Treks are only sold through Trek dealers. So the only place to buy NOS Treks is the Trek bike shop. Contact or visit them to see what they have in old stock.

  2. Ask your bike shop about when they have a warehouse inventory clearance sale. Usually in the spring they'll be selling off the previous years models and although they still won't be cheap, they'll probably be a couple hundred less than the new models. Not to say anything bad about Trek, I think they make excellent bikes, but there's no need to limit yourself to a particular brand. If you're concerned about buying american, check out Specialized, Cannondale, Marin. I've never looked into touring bikes myself, but the Marin's I've seen at my local shop seem very well built and relatively inexpensive.

  3. touring...they have a tiagra tripple model for under 800?  i've been shopping lately, looking to replace my bike.

ebay is generally a place to find used bikes, but if you arent sure what size you need or what you are looking for it is a good way to get burnt.  also, i would put the brand name aside and shop features.  in the end, whether it is a giant, specialized, or trek makes very little difference.  it is the components you want to shop.  i find with trek you pay for the name.  generally they run about 100us more over thier line than other brands.

  4. Trek are great bikes but thanks to marketing, the demand for them makes them nearly impossible to find as a last year's model. They are out there but once you find them, the finding your size becomes an issue with many people. Most people want a Trek because of the money Trek puts into marketing- which is a good thing for them. You should never buy based on a brand. You should buy based on the fit and components. You could be determined to buy a Trek and a Trek's frame geometry may not be the correct fit for you. Maybe a Giant, Specialized, Cannondale, Fuji, or even Felt might fit you better. However, if you're on a budget, consider another brand since the majority of major bike brands offer bikes that are just as great for less money. By the way, if you want to buy an American built Trek, you can only get one if you buy the OCLV carbon frames-which are the top of the line models. All others are made in Taiwan. Nothing wrong with overseas bikes considering 95% of the best bikes out there have frames made in Taiwan. Specialized bikes is a US headquartered company, but they are all made in China. Place of origin is insignificant as long as it's well made. Just ride and have fun.

  5. Well, I guess it depends what you mean by expensive.

If you mean expensive by the number of dollars you have to fork over, consider how much you'd spend on a good steak dinner for 2, or a high end pair of sneakers, or how much you spend on that morning cup of coffee in a year.

It actually takes fewer hours of work to purchase a bike than it did in 1980 for a model of the same relative quality.

My suggestion is to think about the number of hours you have to work to purchase the bike. I typically recommend that a serious part time rider spend 3-4 weeks (120 to 160 hours)  after-tax salary. A casual rider should think about spending at least 2 weeks (80 hours) salary.

  6. I bought a new 2006 Trek Madone 5.2 from a Trek dealership last November (2007).  I paid half of retail ($1500 vs. $3000), so finding a great price is possible.  However, I don't see any great deals right now, in the middle of summer.  If you have the time, you might wait until autumn when the clearance sales start.

  7. I myself am a mountain biker, probably not as old as you, im only 11 but race on a very expensive $4,000 lefty cannondale. I know what u r thinking that much for a bike!!!

I would never pay that much for a bike, but luckily i asked a few people and some who watch me ride and they decided to donate it to me, and im doing very well with it. July 18,08

i conquered the title for national champion in the junior women 11-12. I would suggest asking some people at your races(if u race) or going to local bike shops and asking them for old bikes that they wouldnt like any more.
