Question:

Question about University of Phoenix's Masters of Arts in Education Degree?

Hello. I currently have a BS in Information Technology and wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher. I found the MAED program through the University of Phoenix and was assured my dreams would now be able to come true. I can work on the degree from home, which is a plus since I am a USMC wife and mother of three. I am now hearing that this program may fall short of individual state education requirements because it is supposed to be designed for students who already have a degree in education. From what I am hearing, those without an education degree seeking teaching certification should go for the MAT, or Masters of Arts in Teaching. Does anyone have any experience with the MAED program from UOP? Has anyone successfully completed the program and went on to teach? I am in desperate need of prior students to provide their insight on this program. I look forward to hearing from someone soon.

  1. Look into the Western Governors University. Their website is:

    www.wgu.edu

They offer on-line MAT degrees, but they also offer post bacc teaching certification programs which will meet your state's requirements---that coursework will then continue and apply towards their MAT degree.

It is on-line. Their admission counselors are non-pushy and actually know what they are talking about.

I changed careers at 40 years old. I went from accounting back to school for elementary ed. (I'm a mom of 2 too) I was licensed in Colorado and this license transferred very well to Vermont when I moved 3 years later through an interstate agreement (you can find more details on this below).

Look up WGU on-line and if you like what you see, call their 800#.  I was very pleased that I went through their program--great mentors and very relevant learning that applied directly into the classroom!

    Good luck to you!

  2. I addition to looking for student opinions, also call the education board for the state you'd be teaching in.

I did go on to teach at a private college, but it was in nursing.  You need a masters in nursing, not education, for that.  I've also been training new nurses in our hospital.
