  1. I think that your old VHS only has a coaxial video output. Therefore to make it work, you must connect this to your TV aerial input and tune the TV to find the signal.

The new TV has newer connectors - yellow is for video, but this is probably not compatible with your VHS. White and red are audio connections.

You should not need to use the red and white connectors, should work with just the coaxial cable connected, and the TV tuned in properly!

  2. VCRs had coaxial input for an antenna or cable box so they could record programs.

For output, they supported coaxial cable, as well as composite video - this is the yellow, red and white cables most of us are familiar with today.   Some VCRs only supported mono-sound, so they only had 2 such ports.  If this matches your VCR, just use the yellow (video) and red (audio) cables.  The composite video cable will give you a better picture than the single coaxial cable.

The only other thing you may have to worry about is where are you?  You mentioned your VCR is PAL, which is the primary video format used in Europe.  However, in North America, we use NTSC.  The two are not compatible or interchangable, meaning your VCR, tape and TV must all be PAL in order for you to see anything.  If you're over in Europe, then you should be all set.

If you aren't, then you'll probably be better off taking your tape to a place that can create a copy for you on DVD in the correct format.  There's probably a place near your house that can do this, just look in the yellow pages under Video Services.
