Question about a 1978 Camaro Z-28

It's sitting in my garage, and the body is beautiful. However, it needs to be rebuilt and probably a new engine. My limit is changing spark plugs and oil. How can I get this rebuilt to operating condition (not restored) and do it as cheaply as possible? I'd rather not go over $5,000 total for everything.

  1. check ebay and craigslist for your motor it will usually run you about 2-3hundred dropping an older engine in is as easy as changing the spark plugs just label everything with tape leave the trans in the camaro and make sure the torque converter stays with the trans... there are 4 bolts on the flywheel ( take the inspection cover off the trans turn the motor over by  hand if it can) take the trans bolts out i believe there 6 or 8 support the trans with a jack... the motor has 2 mounts with through bolts take those out and the motor should really pop right out... i take the radiator out with the motors so i don't spill coolant everywhere... do it your self.. it will cost too much to pay someone unless you know someone

  2. Both GM and most good auto parts stores sell complete remanufactued crate engines for your car for around $1800.00. Even if you have it installed by a professional, since it's such a simple job, I can't see it costing more than $3000.00 total for the labor and engine both. You could also find a good used engine at a junk yard for anywhere from $300.00 on up and install that. The crate engines usually come with at least a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty. Junk yards usually give 30 days at the most.

  3. First, I would get a repair manual for the car. Most will give you all the info you need. You could also look for a local car club to join, and look for a neighbor that works on cars alot. He might be willing to help. You will also need to buy some tools. You may also want to get a subscription to a magazine. There are many mags out there that could help you out. You could also look for a night course in auto mechanics. If you really want to learn something, you will.

  4. depends whats wrong with it.   for the engine part, you can rebuild it for pretty cheap. id say anywhere from $600 to $10,000.

Look at a new cam, lifter, rods. etc..   might wanna rebuild the carburetor while your at it. Again, not too expensive.
