Well, me and my husband just bought a 1998 ford Mustang from a buy here, pay here place. The car overall is in pretty good condition. Just a few nicks and nacks on the paint but nothing to serious. It drives pretty good too. It has 101k on it which is pretty decent for a 98 too. Its a 3.8 liter v6 5 spd tranny.

So basically, Im just wondering if these are good cars?!

  1. First give it a tune-up. Should be a fine car.

  2. Honestly, without seeing the car, it's hard to say. But Mustangs have been around forever and are pretty basic and bulletproof. Unless the car was abused, I wouldn't let 100,000mi scare me. With proper maintenance you could go twice that.

    I have a '97 Mustang Cobra Convertible, and I love it !!

  3. it all depends on the previous owner like a 17 year old guy with a lead foot or a old grandma. once those mustangs hit 100,000 miles it can get risky after that. But the price sounds decent

  4. Mustang's are fairly good cars...but with any older model car you can never be 100% sure how well it's been taken care of.

If the previous owners took good care of it, had regular oil/fluid changes, etc..you'll probably get some use out of it.

    101k isn't bad at all for a 98.

    Good luck.

  5. I have had my '98 V6 for over 8 years now. I bought it at 30,000 miles, and it now has 135,000. Still runs like new, because I have maintained it very well. No leaks, no smoke out the exhaust, nothing. It can be a really fun car, even if it isn't a GT. Two modifications I highly recommend are dual exhaust and better wheels. The V6 wheels look really stupid, put some GT wheels on that thing! Also true dual exhaust like Flowmasters makes it sound better and gives it a little more power. I also have cold air intake, throttle body spacer, and a diablosport predator tune on mine.

So anyway, yes these can be really good cars if you take care of them. The 3.8 liter Ford engine has been around forever, so they have lots of experience with it.

  6. yeah its a good car but a car with that many miles on it is pretty risky. anything can happen so if you really like the car you have to be willing to pay.

  7. See if the head gaskets have been replaced yet. If they haven't failed yet, you are on borrowed time. The pre-1999 3.8L is notorious for blowing head gaskets.
