Question about a Neighborhood in Columbus Ohio?

My husband and I just viewed an apartment last night on Heyl Ave in Columbus, Ohio which is right off of Livingston. It seemed to me like this was in the down right ghetto. Now I'm from a very poor community but, I haven't been in a high crime area. My question for you local resident is this, is it really that bad? Is there really that much crime? I called my mom and told her how nice the place was and she said "Well, you better get a gun." I just don't want to live somewhere if my health and safety are going to be at risk. Thanks for any input.

  1. One thing you are guaranteed is your feelings have been shared by others in that same neighborhood.

  2. This is not a politically correct answer, but here goes.  There is no way I would let someone I cared about live where you are talking about.  A few blocks over in the German Village would be great, but the area you are looking at, imo, is just not safe.  Housing is very affordable, no doubt, but to me, it's not worth it.  I know there are better places around town where you would pay a similar rate and be safer.

There are some ok, affordable places near Grandview and Clintonville which may suit you.  Good luck.

  3. well you are the first couple to gentrify the area...get your white friends to move in the area...
