I have a lightswitch that when you turn it off, it disables a spacific outlet, normal I know but this switch also operates the lighting in my living room. I have to plug my phone into this spacific outlet because of its location so my question is, can I install a dimmer switch to dim the lights in my living room all the way down so that I can still have power to my phone when I need the lights off?

  1. No, if you reduce the power your phone will get damaged

  2. No that will reduce the voltage to your which will damage it.

If you have a Computer and a USB cable for your cellphone you can charge it that way instead.

  3. This is incorrect wiring under north american codes.

A dimmer switch would affect the outlet power also.

  4. Depending on the set up, it may be possible.  If the power from the panel is coming to the outlet before it goes to the switch, it is easily done by changing the wiring within the outlet box.  It the power from the panel goes to the switch first and then splits to the room lights and the outlet, it is easily done by reconnecting the black wires within the switch box.

Only if the power goes first to the switch, then to the outlet, then to the room lights  or if the power goes first to the room light are you out of luck.  This configuration would be quite unusual.
