Question about a iv Nurses doctors can you help PLEASE thanks!?!?

i was in the hospital and had a iv in me rite when they put it on in my hand i felt this HUGE pressure go up all the way to my chest it hurt What caused this and is this NORMAL?

  1. It depends on what the medication was and how fast the IV was set, the pace which it was being delivered. If you were allergic to the medication you would have continued to have a reaction. If you were anxious you could also have brought it on yourself , just nerves.


  2. I don't really know but I just wanted to tell you that next time if that happens again you should probably tell the nurse in the moment. If you have questions ask them - not us. They dont know what you feel and whats happening inside of you so its better to speak up if you're feeling something you dont think you should. But I'm sure if you are ok now then things are fine I was just going to say that for future reference....

No this is not normal.  The only thing is that the nurse who inserted the IV may have hit a nerve or something.  Next time, you get an IV make sure to tell the nurse of anything abnormal like this so she can chart it and do something about it.  I have had probably 75 IV's over the years and this never has happened.  I have never had anyone complain of this pressure when I put one in either.
