The leaflet said to contact your doctor if you experience 'this rare but serious side effect: Heartburn' What is the significance of heartburn? I've since been changed to another antibiotic, but I'm curious.

  1. Heartburn occurs when the acid contents of the stomach pass backwards up into the food pipe (called the gullet or oesophagus). This is also known as stomach acid reflux.

It can occur after eating a large meal and some antibiotics also cause it , especially Erythromycin and Clindamycin

Heartburn can be extremely painful but not dangerous unless attacks are very frequent as the oesophagus can become inflamed leading to oesophagitis.
