Question:

Question about airplane ticket fares?

I plan on flying from SEA to EWR (NJ) around 2nd week of Dec and coming back a day or so after new years. I checked the tickets and they are about 400$ (GREAT PRICE for a busy season!) unfortunately I can't afford to buy the ticket until late Aug, so at the end of this month.

Do you think that the ticket fare will go up in a month? if so by how much? I'm not big on airline tickets and don't know how often and by how much they change.

  1. I used to work for an airline.  Generally they will say something like (I'm just making up the numbers here) "The first 50 tickets will be $200, the next 50 will be $300, the next 50 will be $400, etc.".  So as more people buy tickets on your particular flight, the price will go up.

Of course, they could have sales.  Or if the price of oil really tumbles they could reduce ticket prices.  But I wouldn't bet on those.

If when you check the price of tickets it tells you the fare class (aka the fare basis code) that may give you some idea.  It will be a single letter, such as K, T, V, Y, etc.  Not all the letters are used but except for Y (which is the most expensive coach fare) the later in the alphabet, the cheaper the ticket.  So if you search for a ticket and they find you one in T or V, the price still has a lot of room to go up.  If it's in Y then the price likely won't go any higher.

  2. 2nd week in December........Christmas rush.........of course they will go up..

  3. i use farecast.com try it out =p

  4. try this site for cheap flights

    http://asianairfares.com

  5. The price of the ticket may or may not go up.  Its going to depend on how many people purchase tickets, etc.  And right now with the economy,  airlines are really doing some tricky things.  There is no way whatsoever you can determine if the price will go up.  However, based on my experience ( I fly a lot and I am a former airline employee) if nothing drastic happens, the ticket price will remain the same OR possibly go down.

  6. if you can try to travel in the middle of the week not on the weekend

I think you still have time.  I would wait til  20 days out then start checking with orbitz.com or site 59.com is a last minute deals website.

The best time to check for pricing is wednesday night.  that is when the airlines put all the tickets will be on sales for the up coming weekends and the tickets that didnt sales from previous weeks
