Question:

Question about an ovarian cyst?

I have been taking fertility treatments for the past 2 months. Today, the nurse did a vaginal ultrasound in preparation for my next cycle of fertility shots and told me that I would have to forgo the treatment this month due to a large cyst. (I'm not really having any symptoms or ailments due to it.) She asked me if I wanted to take 3 weeks of birth control but since I am obviously trying to get pregnant, I told her no. She said it should go away on its own. If I ever had cysts before, I never knew it until I started getting the ultrasounds. Are they dangerous and could what she saw on the ultrasound actually be cancer? Would the nurse know if it was cancer she was seeing or a harmless cyst?

Thanks!

  1. if it doesn't go away within a time frame then they will check to see if it is cancerous..the only time a overian cyst can be dangerous is if they burst causing damage in the process, it is pretty rare but very bad when this happens

I have suffered from multiple cyst through out my life and have only had one burst in that manner

  2. There are two different types of ovarian cysts. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and "ovarian cysts."  PCOS refers to multiple tiny cysts all over your ovaries - it's thought to be linked to metabolic syndrome and high testosterone.  The 2nd one, actually happens all the time, you just don't usually know about it :p   (Sometimes cysts hurt, sometimes they don't).  They form  during ovulation and should dissolve on their own.  When they don't, and get bigger they show up on an ultrasound.  Eventually they will deflate or burst (both of which are harmless) and go away.

If it was cancer, there would be a big dark spot on the cyst.  The doctors would have scheduled you for some immediate follow-ups....don't worry.  You should be fine :)  The nurse proabably has a pretty good idea what she's looking at, but most states won't let her give you a "diagnosis."  You should call your doc just to follow up.

They offered you the birthcontrol because b/c will shrink the cyst - if you don't ovulate, you don't make a cyst! :)

Don't panic. I'm sure they were just being cautious.  I'm giving you the links to a few good websites explaining cysts - in case you get another or more weird information from the doc.  Good luck!

PS: I should qualify what I said about the bursting being harmless.  If it's not giving you symptoms, causing pain or worrying your doctor, then it breaking shouldn't be a major problem (all of mine have simply burst).  If it was a large painful cyst then there could be serious complications such as internal bleeding ect..... double check with your doctor if you're concerned.

  3. many women actually do have cysts on their ovaries (PCOS), and even others, but most are not cancerous, but can become.  most cysts go away on their own , they pop, but mostly with bc.

i would check with my gyno. my doctor found out i have PCOS, which is many cysts on my ovaries, by doing an internal ultrasound. mine "pop" when i ovulate, but to be on the safe side and you are trying to get pregnant, make an appointment with you gynocologist!!

    good luck and god bless
