Im writing an assignment about how to prevent phishing,

can you pls give me an explanation of why this would work to prevent phishing? Why r the phishing websites usually have numbers etc.?

- Verify the web address and E-mail address

It is also a good way to detect the potential scams by checking the addresses of the websites. If the first part of a web address consists of numbers, it is probably not reliable or trustworthy. For instance, http://150.148.25.100/abcbank might not be a website from the “ABC bank”.

  1. The 'numbers' you refer to are the IP Addresses of the systems.  IP Addresses are like phone numbers for computers on the Internet.  Every computer connected to the internet has an IP Address attached to it (or at least to the router that it is using to connect).  Established Web sites do not want to have surfers to have to remember obscure IP Addresses so they rely on the Domain Naming System (DNS) to translate the IP Addresses to Domain Names that are easy to remember (so it is www.cnn.com, not 64.236.24.12).

The domain names are controlled and have to be purchased from a vendor before you can claim them.

Phishing Websites are set up rapidly by people who either do not want to or cannot purchase a domain name.  As such, they have to rely on the IP Address alone.
