Is it safe to put in your social security number online, or should I just go to the store and ask for a hand written application?

You'd better check the terms and conditions as this information is always available.

Try to use large and well-known sites such as headhunter etc.

Don't ever give out your SSN online.  It's just not secure enough, even if there is encryption I wouldn't trust it.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada you are not supposed to give out that number until you have been formally hired (you just leave that spot blank).
