Question:

Question about baby's bottom?

Today when I changed my 6 month old's poopy diaper, there was a bit of blood that wiped on the wipe- I could see where the bit of blood was coming from- right around the outside of his a**s...almost like it had been wiped raw or something but he's not constipated (and there's no blood coming from inside). What do you think this is? I just put some vaseline on it.

  1. It most likely just got a bit raw from the p**p or being wiped.  A+D ointment or even Desitin should help

  2. If the skin looks raw, it could be a diaper rash.  The one time my baby had diaper rash, it looked like raw chaffing of the skin (almost like a carpet burn).  What worked the best for me was either my Lansinoh Breast Cream or the Lansinoh Diaper Cream.  They worked great! The lanolin in the products healed the rash beautifully and I use the Breast/Nipple cream for all types of scratches my son gets.

Keep the area clean with a mild soap without perfume (Dove is good), PAT dry, and apply cream. While napping I would open his diaper and to let his bottom air out, and sprinkle baby powder with corn starch, or pure corn starch.

  3. Was his BM hard or soft? If it is soft I wouldn't worry much- I would just apply some ointment to the area for a day or too. If his BM was a little bit hard I might add a tiny bit of juice to a bottle of water. I often give Em 1 ounces of juice mixed with 3 ounces of water with each meal- lunch and supper. It helps to soften her BMs and make them easier to pass. Good luck!

  4. I would def. check with your baby's pediatrician and make sure that its really not something serious. if there wasnt alot then i wouldnt worry. but instead of vaseline, a&d ointment works good too.

you notice blood in your baby’s stool this may be alarming. Small streaks of blood in the stool are usually not something serious. However, if your baby has stools that look like dark red jelly or are streaked with mucous you should call your doctor right away. You should also call your doctor if your baby seems to be in pain or if your baby has persistent bleeding that does not go away.

Some other causes for blood in the stool are:

Small cuts or tears on the baby’s a**s - Sometimes babies will develop an anal fissure (tear) from straining. You may notice small streaks of blood in baby’s stool

Diaper rash - If baby has had a diaper rash that has resulted in skin breakdown, he may end up with tiny amounts of blood in his diaper.

Food sensitivities- Dairy sensitivities may cause baby to have bloody/mucousy stools.

But it sounds to me like its an anal fissure, def. talk to your baby's pediatrician on what treatment is good for your baby

  5. A & D works best.  It is called an anal fissure (fancy word for a cut) and sometimes happens to babies when they push for a bowel movement.  It should heal in a few days but if it does not or there is continuous bleeding call your pediatrician.  Good luck.
