Question about baggage handling for 2 stop flights

I am coming from chicago and going to atlanta. From there I am going on another flight to Alaska to get to my unit. Thing is I bought a flight from Chicago to atlanta with my own money and the military bought the ticket from atlanta to Alaska.

My question is would I need to pick up my bags in atlanta and then recheck them for my next flight or would my bags go all the way to Alaska from Chicago?

I arrive in Atlanta at 5:20 and my flight to Alaska is 6:00, so I only have a 40 minute time frame to catch the flight and if I have to pick up my bags there is no way I am going to catch that flight.

Is there any suggestions?

  1. If you are flying the same airlines, or partner airlines, just ask them at the airport when you check-in to link your two tickets.

If you are flying two different non-partnered airlines, then you will need to run because you have to pick up your luggage and then get through security again after you recheck back in.

  2. You should be able to check them all the way through, but the luggage might not make it to the flight from Atlanta with just 40 minutes. Call the airlines in advance for advice. Good luck.

  3. Your best bet is to call the airline and have them input your connecting information ( it can be also done at the airport ) Although, the poster above is correct and they probably won't guarantee that your bags will make it

  4. You should really just do carry on luggage. It's easier, and you don't have to worry about missing your flight, if you have to get your bag in the luggage carousel.

  5. Mike, you should have taken an earlier flight from Chicago to Atlanta, as 40 minutes is less than minimum connecting time for Atlanta. However, the agent in Chicago will check your baggage through to Alaska. The bags will most likely NOT make the transfer and will follow you on the next flight. Because of the less than minimum connection, the airline in Alaska may not deliver them to you.

I would advise you to take a day's clothing with you as a carry-on so that you will have uniform to wear for the next day.

    Good luck.

    Dan
