I just started college and want to take my bike up there to ride around campus. Could anyone give me the name(s) of a reliable bike lock?

Also, (I'm kind of new to cycling) is it bad to leave your bike outside in wet weather? I don't know if bike are mostly made of stainless metal and are capable of standing some wetness or need to be brought inside during rain.

  1. Definitely get a u lock, NOT A CABLE LOCK! theives can easily cut cable locks, but U locks take much more equipment and time to cut through.

No, you shouldnt leave your bike outside in wet weather because, even if your bike is aluminum, the water will rust some of the parts like screws and bolts. plus the seat will be all wet when you ride it home.

Also, if you are gonna be ridin in wet weather, get some fenders because if you don't , your clothes will get all wet, and the water off the road often stains, so you will end up with a whole bunch of little dark gray dots all over your light colored clothes.

If at all possible, bring the bike inside, or under a covered porch.  Depending on your bike, the moving parts might be made of a corrosion resistant metal, however this is a feature usually found only on higher end bikes.  Keeping the bike out of the rain will mean less maintenance and repairs.
