MIght adopt a Parrot from a friend that cant keep. Its a Senegal Parrot and seems really scared right now. She said that it can have a bad temper and be moody but can be lovable also. Basically wondering how long it will take before the Parrot might trust us and to get use to the new surroundings? Or will it even ? Should I just spend alot of time with it?

  1. By the way you're addressing the Senegal, I'm assuming you don't have much experience with parrots. I LOOOOVVVEEEE Senegals, they are very loving, silly, and playful parrots once you gain their trust and affection. Just spend lots of time with her and get her comfortable with you - I would get books on them and read them up online to learn their unique quirks and pros/cons to get a better feel on how to go about this

  2. Biting is a common problem with parrots—partly because of the human reaction to biting. But it is also the easiest problem to solved once you have the right information and resources. Things to consider if your bird is biting or showing aggression:

  3. All birds should have alot of time devoted to them.

My suggestion is this bird should go to an experienced bird person that can work with this behavior problem, but if you are intent on taking it ( wish you'd stated the age of this bird)

then understand Trust is the way to make this bird feel secure and you will have to earn the birds trust by being respectful and kind.

Start by letting the new bird watch you and other's in the home, talk to him always before going to the cage so he know's you are coming. Give him several days to a week to observe you while you observe his reaction's to you and to the new surroundings. Birds display body language and if you observe well you can learn when he is frightened, calm, playful, doesn't want out or picking up right then, sick and more.

Talk quitely, don't move too fast around him until he learns to trust.
