  1. A blue moon occurs when there are 2 full moons in a calender month, it's the second 1, the next one is late next year.

  2. There are two definitions of a blue moon.  One is the trendy, 2nd moon in  a month definition that seems to be a misinterpretation of data from the  Maine Farmers Almanac by a Sky and Telescope writer.  The second is probably the original definition which is a little more complex.  The second definition involves a fourth moon in a season, as most seasons have three full moons that were named (like Harvest Moon, Frost Moon, etc) a season that had a fourth full moon threw off the names so they called the extra moon a "blue" moon.  It really didn't have anything to do with the color as far as I can tell and was just a name.  A blue moon doesn't appear blue, its just a name.  The next Blue Moon will be (depending on the definition used will be December 2009 (using the 2nd full moon definition) or in November 2010 (using the four full moons in a season definition).  There is a great article in Sky and Telescope magazine at http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing... if you want to find out more but basically that is the gist of it.

  3. theres on every two and a half years

  4. November 21, 2010

  5. A blue moon was a synonym for absurdity - considered to be as likely as the moon being made out of green cheese.

There are rare examples of the moon actually appearing blue, after volcanic eruptions or unusual weather conditions.
