Does the date on caned food mean you must use

by this date ?

It is the date that the manufacturer will guarantee the product is good until.  Usually, canned food will last longer but the manufacturer relinquishes any responsibility for the product if it's not beyond the date they've printed on the can.

also, if the can is dented or puffed out in any way, DO NOT eat the food  (mm mm botulism)
