my boyfriend and i have been discussing selling my car and sharing his (to save money, one less insurance/payment each month).

My question is without having insurance (unless i went on his), will that make my insurance go up more the next time i own a vehicle?

my current provider (progressive) increased my rate because i was uninsured for 3 or 4 days, and im curious if this is what will happen if say, im uninsured for a few months.

THANKS!!!

  1. Unfortunately, there is a confusion upon your rate difference. You cannot be penalized for not having insurance. When you sign up for a policy term, you are guaranteed those rating factors for that period of time. So more and likely what happened, was Progressive may of had a rate increase while you were uninsured? You may have purchased more coverage? Driving Record could be different? A Different Pay Plan was purchased? Numerous different reasons could of caused that.

If you reside in the same household as your boyfriend, than your best bet more and likely is to be included on the same policy. Multi Car discount will help out, only 1 installment fee will be charged instead of 2 policies, and you both will be covered on each other's vehicles (when the time permits for that to happen).

I hope this helps, you got to remember that carriers will be adjusting their rates to either gain business, or minimize losses from a bad season of claims. At least in the state of CA, rates can change twice a month.

  2. well i have always used progressive and i went over a year without a vehicle and they didnt increase my insurance at all. i think it went down like $5-10 a month. i think it really depends. but if you were insured under his it would be like you had insurance. actually now that i think of it... when i got my insurance again it asked me why i hadnt been insured for over a year and i just put that i didnt own a vehicle and didnt drive. maybe thats why?

  3. For automobile insurance the obvious way to get a good rate is do a policy comparison on auto policies. Make sure that you compare similar options with the same limits, auto make, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have discount insurers and will give many prices on auto insurance polices.

  4. just put you on his insurance...

  5. You will need to be added to your boyfriend's insurance as a driver, right away.  You want to make sure you are covered if you have an accident with his car.  You will likely not see a rate increase on his policy unless you have a bad driving record because in general, young men pay higher insurance than young women.

Progressive gives a discount if you have 6 months of continuous prior insurance.  You do not have to be the named insured on the policy, you can just be a driver so you being listed on your boyfriends policy would count for the discount.

  6. insurance  is purchased for cars, not drivers So You do not have to have your own  policy to drive another car.  In most USA states, unless you are a student, or your boyfriend has a special restrictive policy, his insurance should cover anyone who has permission to drive his insured car and has a valid license.

  7. looks like you need to sleep!

  8. I think it would have to depend on the company. I've been with State Farm for over ten years, and the ONLY time my rates ever changed was after an accident and when I moved. I would call a few companies just to ask. It can't hurt.

  9. I HAVE THE SAME INSURANCE YOU DO AND THEIR THE MOST CHEAPEST. BUT FOR YOUR QUESTION. IT WONT GO UP UNLESS YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR YOU GET A TICKET.
