Question about carlos marmol?

He will likely get 100 strikeouts this season, which is extremely impressive for never making one start this season. Would marmol be the first cub pitcher to get 100 strikeouts without making a start or have there been other cubs pitchers that have done that? cuz i really have no idea.

  1. I would think so too, usually it is starters that would get a lot of strikeouts in a game, and at the most somebody in the bullpen will come in, for a inning, and hand to the next person, in less the closer. And that doesn't mean that they will come in at the beginning of the inning. I can't think of another Cubs pitcher to get 100 strikeouts without starting one game, so it could be possible that Carlos Marmol could be the first. But like you, I have no idea either, but maybe there are a lot older and wiser Chicago Cubs fans that knows better.

Edit: Check the reply that is right below my post, it looks like that there have been more, and even more then somehow we forgotten. So it looks to me, we have somebody that deserves the best answer, and his post is right after mine. And plus he has been awarded 2 thumbs up, one even from me. Not that you really needed to know that. But still 100 strikeouts without one start, that is still pretty impressive.

  2. Other than Marmol, Cubs pitchers striking out 100 in a season while making 0 starts, some other notables are

Bruce Sutter, 1977, 7-3 in 62 games (0 starts) striking out 129 in 107 innings

    Paul Assemacher, 1991, K'd 117 in 102 innings

    Bill Henry, 1959, 115 in 134 innings

    Lee Smith, 1985, 112 in 97 innings

    Bruce Sutter, 1979, 110 in 101 innings

    Kyle Farnsworth, 2001, 107 in 82 innings

    Bruce Sutter, 1978, 106 in 99 innings

    Ted Abernathy, 1965, 104 in 136 innings

d**k Radatz had 181k in 157 innings in 1964 for the most ever

Mike Marshall had 143 in 208 innings (no starts) for his record setting 106 appearances.

  3. Marmol accumulating 100 Ks without starting is impressive, but the 100 K mark has been achieved by other relievers in a season before. Bard Lidge had around 120 Ks when he was the closer for the Astro's during the 04 or 05 season.
