please no negative comments. im doing the best i can and working to do better.I cannot go into detail of why I need this.

i just need info that can help.

Im moving to a new city. I had to quit my job to move, and therefore have no insurance for my 10 month old. I was wondering if I could get medicaid for her until my new jobs insurance plan kicks in. I think I made too much money when I had my job, and I know they will ask for pay stubs, but until sept. i will not have an income . will they still consider my child for medicaid? i really dont want her to go uninsured and cannot afford cobra. im told even if i only insure my child it will cost 475/month. that is way to much to pay when im not making money at the moment.

the guidelines on the website say that kids qualify if a parent was laid off or fired, but do they consider relocation and searching for a new job?

im desprate for suggestions. thanks

  1. What state do you live in? All states are different. California has emergency medical insurance for children. You would have to call your local social services office and make an appointment. Also in Cali if you take your child in for a check up or shots you can put her on the CHDP program and it will cover her for 1 month.

  2. Oh you can get healthcare for your child alone for under $100 a month. Look into Kaiser or BlueShield. Whoever quoted you that 475 is trying to rip you off. Now if that is for the both of you then that sounds about right, but for only one child- no.

Look around on the internet thru ehealthinsurance website. They are good and can help you.

  3. I assume they are giving you the price for COBRA insurance which if that is the case is very cheap (at least from our costs in the Northeast).

Another option you should consider until you start your new job is the SCHIP program (or whatever your state names the program) which is designed to provide Health Insurance for uninsured children.  Each state has different regulations and pricing but it should be a much cheaper price than COBRA payments.

I am including a link to a blog entry I made which contains links to all the state programs.

  4. Yes, tell them your circumstances and they'll let you know if you qualify. Your start day is usually the day that you apply so, do it ASAP. I don't know what state you are in. But, there are also programs that charge a small premium if you don't qualify for medicaid. In Ca it's called Healthy Families and I paid like 27 dollars a month for three kids.
