I was wondering (actually my mom was wondering) if they make contacts for people with light sensitive eyes (photo sensitivity) for people who's pupils dont dilate as quickly as they should or as normally as they should something to block the light or make the pupil smaller.... instead of having to wear sunglasses all the time or the glasses are "supposed" to darken kinda confusing in know but if you have any helpful info... that would be great!

  1. As a contact wearer for many decades - I haven't heard of any lenses for this condition.

But give your local Optician a call - they will be happy to give you some advise over the phone.

  2. Absolutely, yes! I'm severely photophobic, and there ARE options.

First, there's nike maxsight, which is meant for athletes. These are completely tinted contacts that cover the entire pupil and iris. They come in two colours, 36% grey-green and 50% amber. Either might be useful for indoor use, but from experience, I can say that a person with more sensitive than normal eyes WILL need to wear sunglasses outside.

The other option is prosthetic contacts- these are usually more costly. A prosthetic contact with a clear pupil is just a custom coloured contact meant usually meant to cover eye imperfections, but it also serves the purpose of having a customizable pupil,  and with a black underprint, this can reduce the light coming in by up to 80%. The downside is that these contacts don't allow you to adapt to dark environments very well, and they wont be strong enough in very bright sunlight. Cosmetically, however, they're better than the maxsight.
